run what ya brung
Your Fire on Ice article inspired us here in Connecticut. My brother and I have been sailing are whole lives, most recently on the UConn Sailing Team. Being frozen in for the winter, we decided to take a stab at the iceboat thing. Being college kids, we didn’t have any money to spend on a fancy DN. Using junk lying around, we made an iceboat. Some old 2×4’s, old ice skates, old skis, and a couple old windsurfer rigs and we were on our way. Long story short, we took it out in wind that was sustained above fifty. Wind advisories simply spell fun around here. GPS recorded speeds of 34.7 mph. Not bad for spending nothing. If anyone has the opportunity to sail on ice, it’s more fun that you can imagine. Oh, and we challenge anyone to break 34.7 without spending a dime on their boat. And yes, we did wear life jackets.
