RIP Sail…

RIP Sail…

From one of our favorite Anarchists, Kent H…

Sail magazine this month is featuring 40 years of Sail magazine. Peter Nielsen, the current Editor-in-Chief at Sail has written an excellent opening letter from the editor.

I want you to read this and then decide what to post. Before you read the letter you should know that Peter decided not to include the founding of the worlds largest and most read sailing web site as an achievement in sailing during the last forty years. Sail’ top 40 does not include Scot or Dawg yet it does include Jimmy Buffet. Sail mag includes a time line for special things that have occurred in sailing. During the period of 2001 to 2005 there is space left open with nothing written. It would appear that an additional entry could have or may have been placed on page 50 but was edited out. While Sailing Anarchy was not mentioned in the time line keep in mind that Reid Stow and his 1000 days was mentioned.

My first thought was to blast Sail mag for leaving out Sailing Anarchy but after reading Peter’s opening letter I want to thank Bernie Goldhirsh,(I believe he has past away) Charles Mason, Donald Macaulay and the founding members of Sail magazine for their outstanding work and reflect a great admiration for their willingness to go up against the largest publications. Whatever you think about Sail magazine today in 1969 they took on the establishment magazine "Yachting" and thirty years later forced the same magazine to give up coverage of Sailing. I suspect that the founders of Sail would have fit in here just fine. Jump in
