Here’s a look at what the Thistle Class is doing here in Socal.
February is Thistle Midwinter West Regatta time here at MBYC. This years regatta is February 4, 5, 6, the regatta is in its 39th year and is a “silver chevron event” for the Thistle Class Association. The Thistle class designates a hierarchy of regattas as chevron events, with the National Championship regatta being a gold chevron event. The class has an east and west coast midwinter regatta each year which are silver chevron events.
Midwinters West usually brings in top national competition and this year will be no different. Three of the four top finishers at the most recent US Sailing Championship of Champions regatta will be racing here at MBYC including the current winner Skip Dieball. The regatta most recently attracted 40 Thistles from Washington, Oregon, Arizona, Kansas, Texas, Ohio, New York, Maryland, Florida and from California fleets in the bay area, Sacramento, Fresno and Newport.
Racing takes place on an ocean course just north of the jetty. The racing is Thursday, Friday and Saturday with 3 races back to back each of the days. Roger Patterson is our PRO and has handled the racing very well with the aid of his wife Marilyn. The Wednesday prior to racing, February 3, Skip Dieball and Greg Fisher offer to put on a clinic at MBYC. MBYC’s bay area is perfect for this on the water clinic and we’re very fortunate to have guys that are multiple class national champions offering their help.
Superbowl Sunday and match racing on February 7th is going to be a fun day at MBYC. Not only to watch the Chargers win the Superbowl but the best stadium racing takes place right in front of the club deck. The Larry Klein memorial regatta is a match racing regatta to commemorate Larry, who was an active Thistle sailor and passed away in a sailing accident racing an experimental boat in San Francisco. The regatta consists of three fleet races with the top eight placers being seeded into a single elimination match racing bracket. The match racing, on the water umpires and judges can easily be followed from the club deck. Come out and watch.
By the way, Thistle Midwinter’s West regatta fee is waived for skippers 21 and under. FREE!! The regatta fee is half price for skippers 25 and under.
