GBR 49er aces Peter Greenhalgh and Chris Draper are beginning their quest for Weymouth Olympic Gold this year, this week at the 49er Worlds in the Bahamas. Here’s Peter’s day 1 report:
Today we had an offshore wind with 45-degree shifts and pressure differences from 7 to 18 knots – needless to say, the racing was very up and down! We had a slight gear failure in the first race, putting us on our back feet, and ending up at 10th. Race 2 we were leading halfway up the first beat, but we were unable to get the final half of it right, and took some losses before the top mark. We finished a disappointing 7th after being hard in the hunt during the first lap. Race 3, once again we had a good start but struggled to get the windward mark approach right, meaning we conceded places. We finished that one tenth.
Overall, I suspect we’re around the 15th mark so we have some work to do. Tomorrow we’ve got the same wind direction but more wind, so it be all to play for!
