Flying
We’re a bit late with this report, but it’s worth watching these things rip along..
There was plenty of action with the FireFly 850 Sports catamaran racing at the 23rd King’s Cup Regatta 2009 in Phuket Thailand this year.
After sustaining serious injury in a collision racing Twin Sharks in 2007 Brent Gribble was back again in 2008 but could only manage 3rd place with a very competitive field of 8 FireFly’s.
Brent came back again this year at the owners (Mr Bill Phelps) invitation with some of his regular crew, wife Sarina, who he met in Phuket 6 years ago, who was on the forward nets handling spinnaker sets and drops with Ken Felsman from Australia who was sailing his 5th King’s Cup on a FireFly and his third on Twin Sharks. Others who joined this years crew were Mark Pescott who was on the mast and is also the designer of the One Design FireFly 850 Sports class. Last but not least was Mia Gillow who has been residing in Phuket for about 15 years and has been sailing since she was two years old having covered many ocean miles cruising and racing. Mia did a great job as trimmer for the boat in wind strength ranging from 10 – 22 knots.
This year it all came together over 5 days and 9 races to win by one point to Hans Rahman’s Voodoo Child. – Phil b.
