We reported last month on Grant Wharington’s clever sponsorship raffle, where the title sponsor for the sunfish-attracting super-maxi would be selected from those who bought a $10,000 ‘supporting sponsorship’ of the team. Wharro reportedly raised some $250,000 before announcing the winner, a Melbourne-based sports and event stadium – and the newly named boat promptly dropped its rig on delivery to Sydney for the upcoming Hobart race and pre-event action.
Our Aussie friends are nothing if not resourceful though, and faced with the impossibility of flying his replacement mast – a 45-meter Alfa Romeo rig – from France in time for the Boxing Day legend, his team decided to cut the mast in half for transport, and she arrives this Thursday. The team hopes it can make all the necessary changes to the boat to meet the start and race in the largest-ever fleet of supermaxis in the Hobart, but it ain’t gonna be easy, and this kind of rush seems destined to end in a lot of publicity…and not the good kind.
