On The RAK
Anarchist chick "Astridindubai" has been posting some great updates from Ras-Al-Kaimah as Alinghi set about building the base for their big cat, with some nice HD footage of the unloading of their containers as well as the arrival of the big boat posted. Martin Tasker did a good TV report for TVNZ yesterday that’s worth checking out too. It’s great to see some local excitement building in a place that hasn’t seen any racing before, though we’re unlikely to know the actual venue of the 33rd Cup until the NY Courts decide on the issue, to be argued later this month and decided sometime in November.
With the Emirate authorities laying out some major dollars to transform a pile of dirt into a viable AC island, lead Emirati promoter Khater Massaa is starting to sound a bit desperate to convince BMW/Oracle to drop their objections to the Middle Eastern venue. Massaad told reporters from the Maktoob paper today that he will meet with GGYC reps next week to try to "convince them that we are really looking forward to receive them, to protect them, to do anything for them." But given the events of the past couple of years, does anyone think that either party is going to give up any possible advantage? We sure don’t. And little nuggets like this one about last year’s worker riots at the Cup site sure won’t give Coutts any warm and fuzzy feelings.
