John Winning is sort of the partiarch of the 18 Foot Skiff world. Though he’s in his late 50s, he still seems to sail every ‘Eyedeen’ event on Sydney Harbor, and he keeps the constantly banged-up League boats in running order during the busy Sydney season. In the off season he runs around the world to campaign Yandoo anywhere there’s some action – Auckland, Carnac, and this week, San Francisco. And at the moment, he’s winning – with another old guy, Howie Hamlin, right behind. Who said Skiffs were for the young and foolish?
While the American Sailing League seems to have lost the steam they had when originally promoting 18s on the Bay, the St. Francis Yacht Club is still organizing the 13-boat 18 foot Skiff International event, and with plenty of breeze and plenty of wipeouts, it’s the kind of thing we love. Mixing it up a bit, the Skiffs will use the ‘run what you brung’ Bridge To Bridge Race as one of their regatta races. Results are here, event reports here, and more pics from Erik Simonsen are here.
