Downside Up

The Great Lakes multihull fleet wraps up their season each year with the Gougeon Brothers-sponsored Great Lakes Multihull Championship held out of the egalitarian Bay City Yacht Club. This year’s event had great wind, with SA pal Matt Scharl winning the overall in his all-conquering lime green F-25C “Gamera,” but clearly all was not well.

Matt explains: “The flipped boat is Exodus, owned by Larry Woods, Jr. and helmed by his dad Larry Woods, Sr. (Olympic rep for Canada twice in the Tornado).  They are really fast and give us everything we can take, and they got second for the regatta.  After the race, Jr. took over the helm to sail in, though he was not quite in tune with the big waves and wind, and the crew was relaxed after the race with sheets cleated.  He squared up to a wave and stuffed it, only got the spin eased about 5 feet before the stern went over the bows.  They broke the top of the mast and nearly froze during the recovery, but the boat is generally OK.”
