Brothers and Sisters

Bill Turpin is auctioning a crew position aboard the R/P 78 Akela for the Windjammer Race here in Cali.  The winner will get to help sail Akela from San Francisco to Santa Cruz on Labor Day weekend.  With the right weather, this should be a really fast ride.  Bill is hopeful that he will eventually break Merlin’s record of 6 hours for the 65 mile race.  With a PHRF rating of -126 sec/mi, Akela is plenty fast.  She averaged 12.3 kt in the Transpac race this year with the 3rd fastest elapsed time ever for a manually powered monohull. Proceeds from the auction go directly to the Big Brothers & Big Sisters of Santa Cruz.  The auction winner will need to arrive in San Francisco on the evening of Sept 3 for an early start on Friday, Sept 4.  Bill hopes to be sipping cocktails in Santa Cruz well before sunset on Friday evening.  But, you never know whether the wind gods will cooperate this year…
