This edition of the Solitaire du Figaro is going to the wire, with any one of 25 boats still in with a serious chance of being the overall winner. The last 511 mile leg, from Dingle in Ireland to Dieppe in France, got underway today under a grey sky and typical drizzle of an Irish low, but along the coast of England lies an anticyclone that threatens to bring the sort of still conditions the fleet experienced when approaching Dingle last week. A lot will hinge on weather routing, for this is not a straight line run to Dieppe, but a race to the Fastnet Rock, then round the Lizard and along the English coast to past the Isle of Wight, before turning for the home run across the shipping lanes. It is the coastal part that is expected to be the most tactical, with the possibility of getting stuck in an adverse tide, with little wind to help.
