Saftey in Numbers
So we did a little research and it seems legit. Check it.
In the winter of 2004, my Midwest small boat dealership was failing, my marriage was failing, and my life seemed way out of control. Taking a leap of faith, I accepted a 10 month contract position as general manager of a sailing center/beach activities concession on Maui with the intention of moving the family and having a fresh new start. I also had the intention of buying the business if everything looked good.
Knowing I would need to hire good people I could count on, I called one of my customers, a young college kid named Garrett who had bought his first boat from me- a Hobie 16- to ask him if he’d be interested in working for me during his summer break. Considering most of his friends were either slinging boxes at UPS or sweating it out mowing lawns, he jumped at the chance. Needless to say, he had an amazing time that summer.
He returned to the mainland and finished up school, and I, not having convinced the family to make the move permanent, eventually returned to the mainland as well.
Garrett and I still kept in touch after his graduation, and one day he called me to meet for lunch. He told me he was returning to Maui, and asked if I would put in a good word for him at the sailing center for a job. No worries, I said, and he was Maui-bound once again.
A short time later, he calls to let me know that HE was going to buy the business!
Jump two years ahead, and he is doing well. He has reworked contracts with the resorts and activities sellers, added a few new locations, and upgraded equipment. But, as with all businesses, he’s always looking for an edge.
It seems that through ideablob.com, he has the chance to win a $10,000 prize for his idea to help make the beaches safer for all those who enjoy watersports. "A Stronger Public Safety Program at Wailea Beach, Hawaii" is on the agenda at http://www.ideablob.com/ideas/5905-A-Stronger-Public-Safety-Progra , and Garrett needs votes.
By logging on to a free account at ideablob.com and following the link above, you can vote for Garret to help him raise funds for improved public safety including life jackets and other flotation devices, safety equipment such as backboards, defibrillators, first aid kits, emergency phones, ocean safety and CPR training for hotel and beach employees, and the acquisition and maintenance of a rescue boat. Included in the program is instruction for 100 people per year on lifeguard and first aid training as a way to further boost safety. Additionally, he will be teaming with beach workers in other nearby resorts to provide better safety for guests and the public in general.
He needs +/- 400 votes, but has only mustered 77 through his facebook friends. IN A PLEA FOR VOTES FOR MY GOOD FRIEND, AND IN CONSIDERATION OF THE IMPORTANCE OF SAFETY FOR ALL WATERSPORTS, I AM HOPING AT LEAST A FEW OF THE INSANELY HUGE NUMBER OF SAILING ANARCHY BRETHREN WILL LEND JUST A MOMENT OF THEIR TIME TO LOGIN TO IDEABLOB AND DO THEIR THING FOR GARRETT. THANKS TO ALL! – Steve Greene
