40 Knot Shitbox
Banque Populaire V and Groupama 3 have crossed the Atlantic in under 4 days, destroying the previous record held by Franck Cammas on Groupama 3. Pascal Bidegorry’s BP-5 left New York hours after G-3, but crossed the invisible line marking the end of the run 12 minutes ahead of Cammas, setting the new benchmark of 3 days, 15 hours, 25 minutes, and 30 seconds. Cammas’ time was just under 3 hours slower than Bidegorry’s.
The big breeze and relatively flat water set up by the low pressure system they rode allowed some truly insane 24 hour-runs, including a stretch where each boat was breaking the existing record with each reported position. We were astonished when they broke 850 NM, and hours later the new record was an incredible 907 NM set by Bidegorry and his crew.
We salute the boules enormes on these all-French crews (save Stan Honey on Groupama); there is no one that does it like them. Once the spoiled Swiss brat and the destructive self-made tycoon are done with their vendetta, we hope to see these boys get in the America’s Cup mix. We reckon there will be a few lessons taught.
