Yann Elies won the first leg of the Solitaire de Figaro, pulling into La Coruna to a hero’s welcome. While few may have imagined him getting into winning form so quickly after his horrendous Vendee accident, Elies himself was confident. “It’s only a leg win” he said “and I don’t plan on it being the last, but I’ll enjoy it all the same and also try to keep thinking about what comes next. I want to go the full distance, to win an overall victory. I’ve got to win this event one of these days!”
Meanwhile, the umm…star of British sailing Johnny Malbon is putting in his usual performance, with a 50th place finish in the leg, some six and a half hours behind Elies. “It’s certainly been a disappointing start and I’ve got a lot of work to do.” he said “The boat is fine and I was very clear on my strategy, which should have worked, but I made a couple of errors and was late in getting the spinnaker up. I just need to work out how to keep the boat going consistently fast like these other guys!” We’d really like to know who Johnny is blowing at Artemis to keep the money rolling in; he sure hasn’t earned it on the course. Nice shot from B.Stichelbaut and some top quality vids from Nefertiti TV Productions here.
