Good Lord
Is it possible for there to be a worse story than this from the Cumberland News?
A teenager whose father died trying to rescue her from drowning during a boating accident has also died, police said today. Victoria Wilkinson had been in a critical condition since the tragic accident on Sunday.
The 17-year-old was trapped beneath her Laser Stratos dinghy when it toppled over on Kielder Water, Northumberland.
She and her father, Geoff Wilkinson – group solicitor for children’s services for Cumbria County Council – were taking part in a race organised by Kielder Water Sailing Club at the time. It is believed the boat overturned in a gust of wind.
Mr Wilkinson, 52, was thrown clear but went back to help his daughter. The dad-of-three suffered a heart attack as he attempted to free her from the rigging.
A Northumbria Police spokesman said Victoria died at 1.15pm yesterday. Her family, including her mother Catherine, a local GP, were understood to have been at her bedside in Newcastle General Hospital. Read on.
