We know a lot of you got pissed with all the legal stuff on AC Anarchy, so it’s great to see arguing over sailing performance and techie stuff, even if the talk’s still pretty opinionated. Duh! In an interview with BYM, that master of ocean record breaking multi-design, Nigel Irens, says Alinghi isn’t behind on sailing time: “This is a development of the Alinghi 41 and they tried out things like the S-foils there, so they have been learning pretty fast and they aren’t going to be going out there and doing it all for the first time. The 41 has been perfect for that because, if you wanted to build a big boat like this and get it right, you would undoubtedly build a smaller boat first. Alinghi already had exactly the right boat, so that’s been very much to their advantage.”
Anarchist HNN92 disagrees. “No matter what people think of Alinghi’s multihull prowess, they have not sailed anything like this. LeBlack is not it, the D35 is not it. It is uncharted territory.” Irens also confirmed that the Alinghi deck will be engine powered; we call that progress, but there’s the usual “not fair”, “not sailing” whining from some. Newbie Daniel Gut waded in with a brave first post. “The fantastic amounts of drivel and speculation posted here by weekend sailors enveloped in a thick patriotic fog, is nauseating.” We know there’s a lot of anarchists who do know a helluva lot about sailing and designing stuff, so read what Irens had to say then get over to AC Anarchy to this thread and tell us which team has got it right. The latest pix of the Alinghi mast being fitted are here.
