Bouwe Bekking has been part of this community for a while, and the entire Telefonica team are Sailing Anarchists through and through. That makes TB’s crash this morning much harder to watch, and hearing the sound of splintering carbon is awful when it is our friends’ boat. Still, this is going to be a tough one for Bouwe and navigator Simon Fisher to live down; this is not the time to gamble on a terrible risk/reward ratio position. Throwing away the lead and a very likely 2nd place race finish with a horrible navigational call while damaging the boat horribly and nearly sinking her is just awful luck…or much worse. As Trevor B points out in the forum:
“I was local knowledge for a big canter in the SF Big Boat Series and one of the things we discussed was how fucked you’d be if you ran aground. This boat drew 12 feet when sailing with some heel and max cant. BUT if you ran aground and stopped it then had a draft of 18 feet and you’d be calling for a tug boat to get you off. My heart goes out to these guys. but I agree that luck isn’t the reason they’re in this position .
