Sailboat racing and auto racing have plenty of crossover fans and participants (including your very own Editor, a fanatic sports car and Formula 1 fan), so every now and again, we share interesting facts about the world of auto racing here on SA. Consider them public service announcements.
A forum thread about the 24 Hours of Le Mans auto race this weekend led to the discovery of the newly released film Truth In 24, a documentary of last year’s LM24 race written and directed by the ultra-talented folks at NFL Films. The film is easily the best sports film of any kind, fiction or nonfiction, that we have ever seen, and amazingly enough, it is available for free download in both HD and regular formats. There is a 60-second trailer here, and links to the downloads are on the official site here.
To bring the story back to yacht racing, one of the more interesting facts about this film is that it was underwritten entirely by Audi, for a cost that is probably as much as an entire year of MedCup organization and hospitality. Add that to the hundreds of millions spent to dominate sportscar racing for the past decade, and you begin to understand just how valuable and effective sponsorship can be if done right. Truth In 24 manages to be the most effective kind of advertising there is; the non-advertisement. Understand that and you are on your way to getting a sponsor for your big event or team.
