Most sailors have a hard-on for big ships of all kinds – unlike recreational motor boats, container ships, tankers, freighters, warships, and working vessels take seamanship to run, and knowledge and experience to keep out of trouble. They provide a picturesque and powerful background to sailors’ lives on the water – something to be respected and avoided, but also the most likely source of our salvation should the worst occur to us at sea.
For those of us with a ship-infatuation, the wacky Piet Sinke runs a site for the truly ship-obsessed. The site itself is unremarkable; Sinke’s real gems are his high-res photostream of hundreds of ships around the world, and his daily newsletter – probably the world’s richest source of shipping industry info, piracy reports, and other big-ship news. It’s available online in Flash format, but is more readable when delivered via PDF. Knowing just how much work it takes to put this kind of shit together, we salute Piet.
