Anarchist Eric Wynsma just won the detroit Nood regatta aboard his new Melges 20 and files this report on the win, the boat and the class.
Great event ! We had 6 of the new Audi / Melges 20’s, and a depth of talent that ranges from US Sailing team members, Volvo crew, Scow and Laser champions and the ‘regular club sailors’ like myself that are now sailing this new boat. The boat is forgiving enough that you don’t need to be a rockstar to win, and It’s interesting to compare notes with the 24 guys, as they have much insight to offer. With this boat I’ve had the pleasure of sailing with guys like Wally Cross, Sean Fidler, and Andy Burdick. Ensuring I”m the least talented guy on the boat is a constant goal of mine, this is the best way to learn and get better!
On board the SuperFly at the NOOD’s, I was privileged to have my regular (?) crew John VanZee working the front, and Andy Burdick (Melges Boatworks Prez) sailing with me. Andy is not a ‘regular club sailor’ like me, he is a speed nazi, boat-handling, intense super-champion perfection FREAK, and enough National championship wins on his roster to prove it. I learned a TON about the boat by sailing with him over the 3 days, and have written many notes detailing those topics for my future reference. Those notes are available for sale to the highest bidder !.
