Capricious Crossing
It’s been a strange Atlantic leg and there’s gotta be a lot of people scratching their heads over boat performance. For starters, we had Telefonica Black watching Delta Lloyd going past them and, on their own admission, not being able to do a thing to match the old boat on straight speed, which makes you wonder how much the new generation has advanced. Then we had Green Dragon, which had spent most of the leg bringing up the rear, just failing to beat Puma into second place by less than 12 minutes. So, is Green Dragon the dog that people have been saying, or has it been a case of the navigation not being up to scratch and the guys playing The Game really helping?
It sure was a close leg, with all the boats finishing within just over 5 hours, during the very early hours on Sunday. The Mayor of Galway did not get his wish granted; as it’s an election year, he’d said he hoped the boats wouldn’t arrive in the night, but he seemed to enjoy the party anyway. The welcome ceremonies might have been a bit homely, compared to Brazilian boobs and Chinese dragons, but it was warm and clearly appreciated. Pic from David Branigan and plenty more of all the finishes here.
