Since the birth of SA almost a decade ago (holy crap!), we have been screaming and yelling about the pathetic state of the world’s sailing media, and until very recently, nothing had really changed. But over the past year, it’s impossible not to notice just how much things are finally improving in the quest to get better information to a bigger audience.
Unsurprisingly, the innovation in muti-media presentations isn’t coming from the established journalistic “leaders” in the sport: Print publications continue to cling to their stone-aged world while occasionally giving lip service to their poorly designed and content-vacant websites; and apart from SA and a few other standouts, the number of quality sailing news/information sites around the world is pitiful.
We’re not complaining too much – after all, our reach and size has made it tough for any other site to get traction, and we enjoy our unchallenged supremacy. While there’s no doubt that SA has published more creative sailing media productions than the rest of the world’s sites combined, in our never-ending quest to bring creative multi-media to the Anarchists, we’re noticing some very promising new trends. Spurred on by the need to remain relevant during tough economic times, the development of necessary technologies, and inspired by our own proof that sailing can be viewer-friendly and sexy as hell, free thinking sailor/producers are making shit happen, and it is exciting and gratifying to watch.
