The European Farr 40 Championship series opened this weekend in Porto Rotondo, Sardinia, with day one dominated by Mascalzone Latino helmed by world champion Vincenzo Onorato, who seemed invincible in the light winds. Day two was another story, with Fiamma and Nerone tied at the top, after proving the most consistent, and Mascalzone falling back to third place, just two points adrift, after Vincenzo could only manage a sixth and a seventh in two of the races. It looked like we were in for a tense and exciting final day, but light rain, fog and no wind held the fleet onshore this morning. At noon, the AP came down and the fleet went out to the course, but after two hours PRO Eckhart Reincke was convinced there was no hope conditions would improve enough to get racing started and sent the fleet home. So Alessandro Barnaba’s Fiamma won the first event of 2009. The next start round is at Rolex Capri Sailing Week, in May, where additional entrants will include Jim Richardson with Barking Mad and current North American Champion William Douglass with Goombay Smash.
