After almost 3500 miles at sea, the finish of the Transat BPE – from Belle Isle to Marie Galante – turned into a match race. On Friday night, it was Erwan Taberly, on Athema, who led by about half a mile from Gildas Morvan, on Cercle Vert. Throughout the night the two sailors watched each others lights, as first one and then the other gained or lost. In the end it was Morvan who negotiated a final squall a little better than Tabarly and got a better angle to the finish.
Morvan crossed the line at 05h24’12”, having covered the 3436 miles in a record time of 19 days 14 hours 24 minutes and 12 seconds; an average speed of 7.29 knots. Tabarly crossed 4 minutes and 40 seconds later and third place man, François Gabart – Espoir Région Bretagne – was just over an hour behind the first two. Photo by Alexis Courcoux and more here.
