The organizers of the CYC Race To Mackinac continue their amazing run of growth for the popular freshwater classic, today announcing that their quota for 2009 of 350 boats had been met.  Whether they will increase the number of allowed entries as they did during the run-up to last year’s 100th anniversary of the event is not yet known, so it may be wait-list only for those still itching to do the most popular distance race in the US.

The Bayview-Mackinac race is another story, with only 93 entries thus far across a few courses and numerous handicap systems.  As BYC-Mack chair, SAer ‘Cariguy’ is trying a bunch of new strategies for buoying up this less prestigious Mack; but he’s learning what the CYC has:  Once they’ve fallen on hard times, it takes years of clever thinking and hard work to get these races growing again.  And during Michigan’s toughest economic time since 1929, it’s harder still.  Perhaps if all those people locked out of the Chicago race go over to Port Huron…
