Y’All Come Back Now
2009 Charleston Race Week has come to a close, and by all accounts, was an unqualified success in every way. The event has a long history with SA – organizer Brad Van Liew was a fan and contributor long before he and wife Meaghan took over Race Week, and when they got serious about growing the event more than three years ago, their first big move was to advertise with us. Our first-ever real On-The-Water Anarchy report was from the southern regatta, and we’ve done both of them since, each year better than the last. And this year, all that outreach to show everyone just how great this event is finally paid off, with 174 boats on four circles – 30 more than Key West – experiencing the kind of typically perfect conditions and great hospitality that led Mer and I to move here almost two years ago.
Our own OTW coverage was also a big success, and the feedback we’ve received about the new interface we’ve worked so hard with the Sail.TV folks to create has been very positive. We were able to make higher-quality video and interviews much easier to watch and much closer to truly live action, and while we’ve still got a few bugs to work out (for instance, the player didn’t really work right until Sunday) our outlook for full streaming video from the rest of the events this year is very positive, and we can’t wait to make it happen. I know people will always claim that sailboat racing is no fun to watch, but the fact is that many of you disagree – and we’re going to keep working to make it as fun as possible, and as accessible as we can.
