Ups and Downs
So far, the French Olympic Week at Hyères has been characterised by tricky sailing conditions causing highs and lows for the sailors. British Beijing 49er sailors Stevie Morrison and Ben Rhodes returned to Olympic class sailing in style at the opening day on Sunday, ending their post-Beijing sabbatical with two race wins in conditions that could only be described as testing.
In the Finns, Slovenian world number one Gasper Vincec underlined his ranking with two great races, placing second in the first race and then going one better to win the second race in light and unstable winds, but dropped to second on Monday. Giles Scott – Finn winner at last week’s Princess Sofia event, in Palma, picking up two yellow flag penalties for a rule 42 breach and ending up 26th overall.
With a victory and a third place, RS:X sailor Piotr Myszka of Poland kept the lead he shared yesterday with Liwei Wu of China, who could only manage a 20th place today. Only one thing seems sure, if the weather remains so unpredictable there won’t be any certain winners until the very end. Photo from Guillaume Durand and more here.
