The fleet has scarcely left Rio and already crews are forecasting that this leg will last 20 days, rather than the expected 16. For almost a full day, the VO70s struggled to make between half and one and a half knots, as ultra light winds combined with a ferocious swell, captured in the pic from Diana Bogaards. Torben Grael reported that he had once covered the distance between Rio and Cabo de Frio considerably faster in a Star!
Happily, the swell died down, once the boats had turned the corner, but the wind did not improve a lot for the inshore fleet. Offshore Telfonica Blue was first to catch some breeze, followed by Delta Lloyd which went from last place to second and has hung on there throughout today. The rest are covered by just 5 miles, with the exception of Green Dragon which has opted to divert offshore. So far it has not paid off, the Irish boat is now last and travelling slower that the rest. More.
