The week has barely started but there is no doubt about this one! 13 year-old Paris Henten along with Olympian Chis Rast just won the 22 boat 29er Mid-Winters West Regatta. Young Paris racked up four bullets on the final day left no doubt about it. Wow! Here’s the report….

Coronado Yacht Club finished up “March Madness” today with the 29er Mid-Winters West Regatta, its 3rd regatta of the month. After running the Moth PCC’s and the Perry 420 Regatta earlier in the month, CYC attracted 22 29er’s including many of the top US teams training for this summers 29er Worlds at Lake Garda.

Most impressive was the large number of female sailors, 18 total, nearly ½ the fleet. 2 races were completed on Friday Afternoon in a 15-18 knot North-westerly, enhanced by a North-easterly. Jack Driscoll of SDYC and SF Bay legend Matt Noble of Richmond YC picked off 2 bullets, followed closely by Mac Agnese of Lauderdale YC and Ian Simms of St Francis YC.

Saturday, 6 races were completed in an initial 10-12 knot westerly that gradually built to a “killer” 15-20 Northwester. Epic South Bay conditions. Judge Ryan of SDYC and Chris Segorblom came on the scene and put on a clinic for a couple races. The real trend of Saturday was, the teams with the best crews were clearly faster, both directions. A combination of skill and endurance allowed those teams to pull off the flying gybes and wire to wire tacks just that much better. Also the teams that could get more vang had “liftoff” while the “vangless” were 5 degrees lower and less stable.

Sunday the sailors woke to a 6 knot South-westerly and then sailed 4 races in 7-12 knot “pulsing” south-west gradient all day. The day belonged to 13 year old Paris Henken of CorYC and 3-time Olympian Chris Rast of Southwestern Yacht Club with 4 bullets. They had their best starts of the regatta, upwind they were a touch faster than most and downwind they were “gone”, putting on a clinic of low and fast.

The top female skippers were Paris Henken of CorYC, Georgie Ryan of SDYC in 5th, Marly Isler of SDYC in 6th and the top all female team was U-18 teammates Julia Paxton of Richmond YC and Samantha “CC” Childers of SDYC/CorYC in 7th.

12 races were completed by a great race committee that included former 29er Class President Bill Maxam, Current president Dave Bernal and class Secretary Chip Nielsen. Over 40 volunteers worked to pull off this annual event. The 29er Class and CISA (California Int’l Sailing Assoc.) provided a clinic on Thursday and Friday with Coaches Jen Glass, Ben Glass, Jon Rogers and US Sailing U-18 Coach Leandro Spina. Emphasis was on developing female 29er teams and gauging the skills of skiff sailors who are under 18 years old. More info.
