Landing a regatta sponsor in today’s economy is a big deal.  Especially if it is for a regatta that has never had a sponsor before but it just happened.  The Waikiki Yacht Club signed an agreement with FujiSankei Business i to be the title sponsor of the 2009 Waikiki Offshore Series.  This five-year-old regatta is filling in the void left when Kenwood ended their sponsorship in 2000.

FujiSankei Business i is the business newspaper division of the FujiSankei Communications Group, one of Japan’s largest media companies.  “In these depressed times we want to do something fun and give our readers a detailed view of racing in Hawaii, the people, the culture and the fun that is still going on in the world.” Said FujiSankei Business i Chairman Shun Eguchi.

For 2009 the FujiSankei Business i Waikiki Offshore Series will run the famous 145 Molokai channel race that takes sailors on the north shore of Molokai, round a mark off Maui and then the fun surf home down Molokai and across the Kaiwi channel to the finish at Diamond Head lighthouse.  Drumbeat still holds the record for this course set in 1990 at 14:52:31.  Who doesn’t remember the gybe at Kalaupapa? We welcome all Transpac racers to stay and play.  Surfing the warm Hawaiian Trade winds is what life is about…
