Post Vendee Blues
It was not a real secret and it’s been officially confirmed today, the Calais Round Britain Race, next big thing on the 2009 IMOCA agenda, has been cancelled due to lack of entrants. We hear only 5 boats were ready to go, and 5 boats doesn’t look too good for a class with such international aspirations. The thing is… November and the Transat Jacques Vabre is still a long way away, so what could the guys have for starters and cocktails while they wait for the main course? How about the UK races, Round the Island, Cowes Week and the Fastnet? Unless someone in Brittany is planning to fill the void with a new event (mind you that is pure speculation – no rumours sustain that hypothesis)? On the boats front, JP Dick’s Paprec has been sold to the Barcelona bunch (some of you might remember the boat won the first Barcelona World Race last year), just like her sistership Gitana 80 as we wrote here a couple of weeks ago. And if you fancy owning a Juan K designed IMOCA 60′, you can make an offer as there’s currently a blue one up for grabs… Some famous boats are likely to change hands soon, including an orange Farr if our ears still work properly. Of course, some new boats are also on the horizon and it seems like a very good man who goes by the name of Guillaume Verdier (associated with the VPLP multihull experts) may have to spend a few hours behind his screen soon – JP Dick officially announced he had signed with Guillaume and VPLP for his next 60, Sam Davies said that she would do so as well as soon as she’ll secure a budget, and other high-profile singlehanders seem to be knocking on his door. – Jocelyn Blériot.
