You might have seen the short piece “Weight A Minute” I wrote last week on how screwed up weight management issues are in certain one-design classes.  My point was simple – that both programs and classes are doing a disservice to themselves by sticking with the existing binge and purge weigh-in process, and by trying to have the tiniest possible chicks on their boats.  My e-mail inbox has never been so full, and I sincerely thank you for your notes and comments in support of my point of view.

But I did something very unfair in that article – I called out a few local sailors that I care immensely about.  I exaggerated some of their statistics, and used them as examples of actions and attitudes that they’re not guilty of perpetrating.  I apologize with all my heart to the sailors named in my story, most especially to “Chris,” who is truly one of the good guys in the sport.  He has always publicly supported women in sailing, and has helped many girls, and many people in general, become real sailors.  And now, to wipe the egg off my face…
