There have been mutterings in Auckland this week, from teams who felt hard done by in the LVPS, having lost races through no fault of their own. At least that’s how they saw it. First we had the head foil problems, which saw Origin abandoning whilst beating BMW Oracle and the Greeks denied a start postponement, because they couldn’t hoist the jib. Then we had the controversial deduction of 0.5 points from Origin, after BMW Oracle had driven into the Brit’s boat, but all this seemed like a storm in a teacup, after Alinghi dropped a bombshell.
There was a sizeable spectator fleet and a good crowd onshore, some of whom had taken time off work to see their boys come up against the guys who had taken their Cup away, when the Swiss announced that they wouldn’t be racing.
