A U.S. Coast Guard Maritime Safety and Security Team spotted a suspicious object floating in the Pacific Ocean about eight miles west of Torrey Pines State Beach Tuesday morning, a Coast Guard news release said.At about 8:30 a.m., the Coast Guard team was conducting a routine patrol and discovered an abandoned fishing net and a box drifting with wires protruding from it.The team established a security perimeter around the object to prevent mariners from transiting through the area, the Coast Guard said.

An FBI Bomb Technician, along with members of the San Diego Metro Arson Strike Team Explosive Ordinance unit, San Diego Lifeguards and the City of San Diego Ranger/Diver Remote Operated Vehicle team, were transported to the scene onboard the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Haddock.Once deployed, the ROV determined the object to be safe, officials said. It was brought onboard the Haddock and identified as an instrument package that attaches to a weather balloon, the news release said. Thanks to 10 News for the story.
