The battle of the twenty-foot sportboats is in full swing, and with 36 Viper 640s registered for Charleston Race Week, solid OD starts for the little Viper in St. Pete (February), Miami (March), and a rapidly growing fleet in Texas, the 640 is firmly in control of the 20-foot market – at least on the US East and Gulf Coasts. The no-hiking crowd has largely ignored the Laser SB3 in favor of the good looking and well-marketed Melges 20, which has just under 60 orders as of today, largely due to Melges’ reputation for fleet building and support. The other 20s remain fun little rides with some regional growth, though none are likely to grow into the kind of national or international fleet we expect from the V640 and M20.
But there’s another segment that bears looking at – the sexy, gucci, more pricey “Super Twenties.” We’ve featured all three boats on SA, but now they are all available – so here are some stats thanks to socalsailor38. Have a look, check out the thread for pics, and have a say on your favorite.
