The Rolex Cup Atlantic Circuit kicked off in Argentina with the coastal race, from Buenos Aires down the River Plate to Punta del Este, in Uruguay. The color of the water, in this pic from Eduardo Grunberg, gives a clue to the difficulties of this race. There are plenty of sand banks in the river, which makes for challenging navigation, especially for the deeper draft yachts.
That did not stop the Argentinean Navy’s Frers 60, Fortuna III, which draws 3.7 meters, from beating the record it said in 2005. Fortuna III completed the course in 18 hours 31 minutes, bettering its previous record by 18 minutes. Oh one thing – 1997 called, they want their panel sails back! More pix here.
