Big Pimpin’

There is a new race in Southern California. The Border Run, to be held on the same day and start from the same port as the famous Newport to Ensenada Race on April 24, 2009, promises to be a challenging and fun alternative to the famous international yacht racing contest.

While it’s being promoted as an alternative to the Ensenada race, it is shaping up to be quite a bit more than that. The race has a European flare, in that it welcomes sponsorship allowing a fresh perspective. They have partnered with Hotels and Restaurants and offer cash gift certificates and prizes in addition to the ever-popular trophy.

All classes are invited in boats 18-feet and larger.PHRF, IRC, AMERICAP, ULDB A, ULDB B, One Design, Cruising Class boats, Multihulls and anyone else who looks to experience an overnight international yacht race, but doesn’t want to hassle with passports, customs and long deliveries. Promoters are quick to point out that race makes for safe and easy travel for friends and family and conveniently finishes where San Diego Yacht Club’s Yachting Cup begins the following weekend. They are also proud that the event supports the local Newport and San Diego economies.

Starting from Newport Beach at 11 a.m. (one hour before the Ensenada start) sailors will sail into Mexican waters to take the small Coronado del Norte island to port and sail to the finish just outside of San Diego Harbor – a 93 mile International yacht race.  For those who prefer a shorter course, there is the option to choose a more direct route to San Diego making for a 66-mile jaunt. Seatow is onboard as one of the sponsors and will follow the fleet offering free towing during the race for sailors who encounter problems.

In addition to insuring an interesting and competitive race, coordinators are also devoting ample attention to the pre and post party festivities. The pre party on the 23rd of April will be on Newport Bay with Seatow providing shuttle service from yacht clubs to the party. The after party and prize-giving ceremony will take place in San Diego and act as base camp for the Border Run sailors and their friends and family.

Come join the fun and be part of the Inaugural 2009 Border Race and be a part of history. For more info go to the race site or call 800-366-8584.
