The Australian Etchells Championship has been eventful since before it started, with competitors getting advice on how to deal with sharks, after some “biggies” had been seen. Then the much fancied and almost new Triad, crewed by John Bertrand, Ben Ainslie and Andrew Palfrey, suffered damage to its chain plate structures and bulkheads, as it was going out of the river, in winds of 27 knots.
In Sunday’s hotly contested “practice” race, the repaired Triad and Steampacket 7 were OCS and the winner was Skip Lissiman, on Bandwagon. Ben Ainslie commented “What great waters to sail in! Today we fell off the pressure a bit with Lissiman a bit higher, he took off in plenty of breeze.” Monday, the first official race day, saw a fair bit of chaos and carnage, with Medium-Rare forced to retire holed and Chris Hampton’s Tango with bow damage. Several protests need to be heard before the results are announced. Pic from Steve Hall and bertrand pic by Christophe Launay. More here.
