Our pals at the US Merchant Marine Academy in New York have one of the sweetest sailing programs going, with the donated Belle Mente and Genuine Risk added to their stable over the past year. It’s a great program that teaches seamanship, leadership, responsibility, navigation, engineering and much more to the cadets, and the Anarchists that run the place contribute a great deal to the community – both ours, and the maritime community in general.
They received a late Christmas gift last week when Jim Swarz agreed to donate the new STP65 Moneypenny to the Academy just 6 months after her first race. A high-tech venture capital specialist, Swarz can’t be having a good time at work right now – and Moneypenny’s underwhelming performance in almost every race was a good excuse to get rid of the dead wood. The boat is scheduled to sail the Fort-Lauderdale to Charlston and Charleston to Bermuda Races – maybe the cadets can get more out of her than Swarz’s high-priced talent could?
