High and Low
With yet another low pressure system forecast, some of the boats in the Portimão Global Ocean Race opted to forego Christmas on the 25th and celebrate when things were a bit less hectic. The good news was that the wind wasn’t expected to reach the hurricane force of the last gale! The fleet survived that one pretty well, though Team Mowgli ended up with minimal communications, after a massive wave broke over the transom and wiped out antennas and communications equipment. The big casualty of the second gale was Nico Budel, on Hayai; his mainsail car exploded forcing him to drop the sail and continue under head sails alone. That was not what ended his race though.
On December 29, Nico sent out a MayDay, after his Open 40 Hayai had serious keel problems; in the shape of a bulb in immediate danger of falling off. Nico was very relieved to end up on board the CSK Radiance, which was undertaking its second Southern Ocean solo sailor rescue! Pic from Beluga Racer/PGOR. More here
