On the Move

We all know that racing fleets have already been strongly effected by the recession, and many have been wondering just what direction the sport will take in the aftermath of the current crisis.  These guys have an answer – singlehanded speed machines.  A-Cats are cheap to move, relatively cheap to buy, tweaky and technical, and likely to have over 50 boats at some of the events in their new 5-regatta winter circuit.  It’s a young group that tends to camp and party on the beach, but also includes some of the best multihull sailors around, and the class’s growing popularity is due only to the resourcefulness of its members.  Guys like Ronstan sales manager Ben Moon, the sparkplug behind promoting a Class that tends to stay off the radar, and guys like Bill Erkelens, owner of this monster of a trailer, dedicated to making sure the boats can get to the races.

We plan on stopping in to see them in Islamorada at the first event in the series, and we also hear that there may be a five-episode TV/internet program on the Class this Spring.  Tune in if you can.
