MSNBC News anchor and Rhodes Scolar Rachel Maddow ran a segment this weekend on what she called the “demolition derby” in the Southern Ocean that the Vendée Globe has become (even more so today as Brian Thompson attempts structural repairs on Pindar). It’s always noteworthy when a major television show focuses on some of the more obscure parts of our sport (and in the US, pretty much all sailing is obscure), but Maddow’s comments paint one of the most dramatic and least elitist of all ocean races as a silly game. Her liberalism and the fact that she’s a lesbian have helped fire up the Anarchists commenting on her piece – what a surprise!
In other Vendée news, the Anarchists that run the Western Australian Freodoctor website mixed some of their original footage from Yann Elies’ arrival in Fremantle with some of the official race video to come up with this video and report. They write that "Yann was standing on the boom attending to reefing when the boat buried its bow. He was launched off the boom, through the rigging, and ended up on the bow. The Royal Flying Doctor medic who attended to Yann onboard Generali reported that his injuries were worse than initially suspected; he has a broken femur, a number of broken ribs, suspected punctured lung and possible pelvis injuries."
Well done to the freo boys. And well done to the Navy.
