Steve White’s emotion filled expression in this pic from Mark Lloyd says it all. One moment his dream of competing in the Vendee Globe was a disaster for his family. They’d been determined that he and his ancient Open 60, Spirit of Weymouth (originally the 2000 entrant Gartmore), would race around the world, but it was tough going and, by the time Steve got to the Vendee Village, with his old boat, old sails, old rigging, they were in danger of losing their home.
Then, out of the blue, came a group of philanthropists who saw a connection between Steve’s struggle and a charity that aims to rehabilitate servicemen, with horrendous injuries, though sailing, The only condition of the sponsorship, which will see Steve start with new sails, rigging, generator, electronics was that the boat is re-named “Toe in the Water”, after the charity.
