Fourteen
years ago the U.S. Vintage Model Yacht Group was formed to preserve
and promote the history of model yachting in the United States. One
focus is the Vintage Marblehead (VM) class, radio control replicas and
retro designs based on the free-sailing Marblehead boats that were the
backbone of U.S. model yachting in the years just before and just after
WWII. The fruits of our labors can be seen in this great photo by Jane
Peterson: eleven VMs, headed for the windward mark on historic Redd’s
Pond at (where else?) Marblehead, MA. They were competing for the Bithell
Cup, named for the late Bill Bithell, who was America’s first World
Champion model yachtsman. More on all this can be found right
