Some America’s Cup team principal’s Opinions (Part one of Three)

By Sebastien Destremau

The America Cup was shaken by a legal earthquake last July. In validating
the Club Nautique de Vela (Spain) as Challenger of Record the Appellate
Division of the New York Court put the 33rd America Cup back on the
track desired by Alinghi and the Societe Nautique de Geneve. This was
prior to the counter attack launched by the American team, represented
by GGYC / BMWOracle, who immediately appealed this decision. Not a pleasing
outlook for the other challenging teams who suffer from this situation
and are rightly concerned that the next ‘conventional’ America
Cup’s could be pushed back even further into the ‘never
never land’.

A few weeks ago, we asked all the main actors to express themselves
on Appellate Division of the New York Court’s ruling and the subsequent
American’s appeal. We did receive replies from the title holder
Alinghi as well as Shosholoza, Team FrenchSpirit, Argo Challenge, K-Challenge
and Mascalzone Latino. Until Alinghi decided to put the legal conflict
where it belongs, i.e. a legal battle that should not have high jacked
the event and at last has announced last week the 33rd America Cup to
be held in 2010.
