The New King

New King

– Sunday marked the dramatic finish of the King
Edward VII Gold Cup
with Swede Johnnie Berntsson being crowned the
new king of this prestigious event – the second to last on the
World Cup Tour and one of the best known and most popular events on
the circuit.

Berntsson had only completed one other tour event this year but his
match racing style was impeccable – and may be due in part to
his recent training and sailing with former Gold Cup winner Peter Gilmour
and the presence of teammates from Sweden’s Victory Challenge. During
today’s match, Berntsson beat a young, up and coming New Zealand team
skippered by Adam Minorpio who in the semi-finals had bested three-time
Olympic Gold medalist Ben Ainslie. True to match racing, it is a great
game of strategy and skill and the Hamilton harbor venue makes a perfect
playing field for this type of racing.
