Chick of the Week
number of Charleston, SC students from the all-girls private school Ashley
Hall banded together to raise over $4,000 in one day for the beleaguered
sail training schooner "Spirit of South Carolina" last week.
The Spirit lost all her electronics and engine-controls in a lightning
strike earlier this summer off Newport, and the repair bills have been
massive. The owner of the Spirit is the South Carolina Maritime Foundation
– the same nonprofit group that runs Charleston Race Week and supports
SA’s On-The-Water Anarchy – and they still face challenges dealing with
considerable expenses to repair the ship, as well as lost revenue from
the need to change the ship’s summer schedule.
This ship is one of the most beautifully built replica tall ships in
the country, and the impact it’s had on thousands of students throughout
South Carolina has been substantial. Follow the girls’ leadership and
support the foundation through their website or by participating in one of their upcoming fundraising events, information
about which is available on the site or by calling the foundation office
at (843) 722-1030 ext 17.
