of a Birthday
Today is the 25th anniversary of arguably the biggest day in America’s
Cup history: the day Australia finally wrested the Cup from the Yanks.
Most everyone remembers the deal: DC and Liberty jumped out to a 3-1
lead over Australia II, but the Aussies clawed back and down significantly
in the deciding race 7, DC did not cover and Aus II, quick in the light
passed them and went on to win the Cup. The icing on that particularly
tasty Australian cake was of course the winged keel that was later revealed
to all the world.
Interesting how such a pivotal and involving time in AC history makes
all the shenanigans of today between Bertarelli and Ellison look so
childish. Here’s a good
story on the big win.
