At The Wire
The final day of Melges 24 Nationals was “as tough as any racing, anywhere,” according Brian Porter, the new, and incumbent, National Champion. Only in the last leg of the last race did Porter’s Full Throttle claim the overall victory.
Corinthian (and then non-Corinthian, but that’s another story) entrant (and anarchist) Simon Strauss’s Simplicity led the overall into the final race, just three points ahead of Stu Simpson’s Barbarians and just one ahead of Full Throttle, who owned all the tiebreakers. The race was run in shifty Northerlies and light air at the bottom, with more breeze at the top. Chris Larson’s Lightwave led by light years but wasn’t a factor for the victory, with Barbarians and Simplicity behind. Olympic 470 choker Stu McNay with Brian Bissell calling tactics came next, while Full Throttle was stuck just behind and flushed to the far mark.
