Damaged II

remnants of Hurricane Ike combined with a Canadian cold front and created
a nasty storm in upstate N.Y. The damage around the eastern shore of the
lake was, while not unprecedented, very significant. The sailing community
was hit hard in Chaumont N.Y. The small town and home to the Crescent
Yacht Club, and The Chaumont Yacht club saw a 6 plus foot storm surge
in Sawmill Bay. Boats were seen floating above the docks they were tied
to as the surge poured into the harbor.
During
the storm two boats broke free from their docks. In fact, a Pearson
33 took the dock and the dinghy tied to it all the way to the shore.
A J-30 rode the surge into the beach as well. A large Sabre pulled her
mooring anchor off the bottom and dragged it over five hundred yards
before it finally grabbed the bottom again. Sources in town told this
Anarchist that the surge swallowed up docks and bent pilings at CYC.
While this damage was nothing compared to the problems in Texas it is
amazing the a Hurricane that hit Texas this past weekend could hit Lake
Ontario so hard. – Canaan Leonard.
